Woman gets 20 years imprisonment for manslaughter

30 years old Hawa Kuyateh, who pleaded guilty to the offence of manslaughter, has been sentenced to twenty (20) years imprisonment at the Freetown Female Correctional Centre. 

Kuyateh was standing trial before Justice Ivan Sesay for the offence of manslaughter contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone.

According to the State Prosecutor, Jesse Tucker, the accused on the 11th of June, 2019, at White Stone, Wash Car, Waterloo, Western Rural District, unlawfully killed one Morlai Koroma.

During the trial, the convict severally told the court that she wanted to change her initial not guilty plea to guilty.

The convict had admitted to the police that she killed the deceased.

According to the convict, the deceased was her former boyfriend, who felt aggrieved after she decided to break the relationship with him and left his residence.

She narrated that the deceased started calling her mobile phone and insulted her, calling her a prostitute. 

She told the police that in the morning hours of the 11th June, 2019, she went to the deceased’s home to collect a coolman she had left behind. 

She said on her arrival, the deceased started insulting her and picked up a shovel and stone to hit her, but that she ran away.

She stated that the deceased chased and hit her with a stone at the back.

She further told the police that the deceased got hold of her and pushed her to the wall, adding that she fought back by hitting the deceased with a stone on the head and subsequently ran away. 

She said the deceased fell down while chasing her and that he was rushed to the hospital, where he died later.
