Wilberforce Barracks in dire need of public toilet

October 26, 2017 BY Dusuba Koroma

Wilberforce Barracks, which is the 3rd Brigade, is situated in the west of Freetown, and also one of the biggest military barracks in Sierra Leone, has for years being without proper toilet facility which is exacerbated by over population and poor water supply to hundreds of soldiers and their families.

According to Captain Peter James Bakana, Armed Forces Band Adjutant, the Barrack lacks decent public and home toilet facility to be used by soldiers and their families.

He further explained that the plight of residents has mainly been precipitated by makeshift structures constructed by the colonial masters, which have become dilapidated due to increase in the number of soldiers occupying the barracks.

‘‘What the colonial master’s setup were just temporary structures to accommodate few soldiers at that time,” he said.

Captain Bakana further stated that most of the occupants within the barracks are in the habit of depositing garbage in the same stream residents fetch water for domestic use.

However, Brigade Commander, Brigadier Usman Sesay, denied the barracks has any issue with toilet facility, insisting that occupants have been misusing the ones that are available.

“Under normal circumstance nobody should use the toilet more than three times a day,” he averred.

He conceded though that the barracks is overpopulated because people above 18 years and not in the army occupy certain residences within the barracks, which he said was against military regulations.
