Water Resources Management Agency solicits Le6.5bn

The National Water Resources Management Agency (NWRMA) has requested the sum of six billion five hundred and sixteen million Leones (Le6,516Bn) to be provided them for the 2020 financial year, to aid the effective and efficient management of the country’s water resources.

NWRMA came into existence by an Act of Parliament in 2017 but operations of the agency commenced in February this year.

Presenting their income and expenditure for 2018 and first six months of 2019, strategic plan and 2020 budget proposal on Tuesday October 1, 2019, Director of Planning and Research Operations, Tiideni Hawa Jabbi, stated that for them to be on the right path, they have put together a five year strategic plan which will serve as a roadmap to achieve their vision.

She underscored the significance of having their proposed budget approved as they wanted to intensify the full implementation of NWRMA’s mandate, vision and mission.

She added that their strategic plan proffers sustainable solutions to the efficient management and regulations for the country’s raw water resources among competing users.

“We are of the view that if we fully implement the plan, catchment degradation will be resolved,” she said.

Ms. Jabbi assured of their determination and readiness to ensure the management and sustainability of the country’s water resources among the competing users, while at the same time ensuring that the resources are also protected, developed and conserved with a view to cater for the basic human needs of the people.

According to her, the background to the establishment of the agency was the fact that the water resources of Sierra Leone are faced with continuous water stress despite the country’s vast natural resources.

Director of Planning highlighted the development of NRWMA sector coordination framework, mapping raw water users and drilling company’s nationwide, securing parliamentary approval for legislative instrument on water rights permit and driller’s license regulations, developing a financing strategy and resources mobilization plan, and developing public education and awareness creation plan as the core deliverables for 2020 financial year.

Being a sensitive entity for human survival, the agency proposed budget get the approval of civil society and non-state actors, who unanimously endorsed it to ensure full operationalize of the agency for sound policies and legal framework.
