Two remanded for smoking cannabis

January 8, 2015 By Isata Janneh

The duo of Sulaiman Deen and Alimamy Bangura were yesterday remanded at the Male Correctional Centre on Pademba Road by Magistrate Komba Kamanda after they were arrested for smoking cannabis, known locally as ‘diamba’.

The accused were arraigned on two counts of unlawful possession of cannabis sativa contrary to section 48 of the Pharmacy and Drugs Act of 2001. The prosecutor says they were found in possession of 57 knots of cannabis sativa without lawful authority.

According to police prosecutor Sergeant 8715 I.S. Bangura, the duo was arrested on 5 January 2015 at Lucas Street in Freetown, at a place frequented by cannabis smokers.

The accused pleaded guilty to count two – being found smoking cannabis sativa – but entered a not guilty plea on count 1, being found in possession of 57 knots of the banned substance.

The matter was adjourned to 14 January.
