Officials of Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs were unable to account for Le1.228 billion during a public hearing by the sub-appropriation committee in Parliament which is looking into 2014 and 2015 allocations to ministries, departments and agencies.

Chairman of the committee, Hon. Amadu Kanu, stood the ministry officials down for their failure to account for the said money, provided by government and donor partners.

Hon. Kanu underscored that the country faces a huge challenge in taking care of street children, and reminded the officials it was their responsibility to care for those children.

He warned them to present supporting documents in relation to the more than one billion Leones funds when they face the committee again, and that failure to submit the documents for further clarification would leave them with no option but to withhold their budget allocation.

Other committee members also raised similar concern as to whether the ministry was adequately prepared to care for Ebola orphans.

However, Permanent Secretary in the ministry denied they receive any funds from donors, claiming that non-governmental organisations perform most of the work they are supposed to do, leaving them with supervisory and monitoring activities.

He pleaded with the committee to help them to do proper monitoring of non-governmental organizations that are operating in their respective constituencies, because according to him, many are not doing the right thing.
