President of the Sierra Leone Wrestling Association (SLWA), Prince Sualley, says they will use both the Yasar Dogu Freestyle wrestling and the Vehbi Emre Greco Roman tournaments in Turkey as preparation ground for the African Championship in Alexandra, Egypt in May.
According to the SLWA prexy, the two tournaments will come up in March and April respectively and they are planning to use them as standard preparation for the African Championship, which will be qualification ground for both the World Championship in the USA and the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.
“Already we have expressed our interest to participate in both tournaments and the organisers have acknowledged that. We are only waiting on a single document which will enable us to take part and we are hoping to get it this week,” he said.
“Our wrestlers are currently going through a light training session, which is good for them. The other positive thing for us competing in both tournaments is exposing our wrestlers to advance training facilities before challenging others for a place in the Olympic Games and World Championship.”
With a jam-packed 2015 calendar featuring a lot of important competitions, Sualley is hopeful this year will be a fruitful one for his association and the wrestlers.
He said: “The 2015 calendar is important for us and we are hoping to secure at least a medal in each of the tournaments we would be competing in. However, our top priority is success in both the African Championship and the World Championship in USA.”
