Sierra Leone Institution of Geoscientists (SLIG) last Friday held their monthly general meeting at the Ministry of Information and Communication’s conference room at Youyi Building in Freetown on the topic “Rare Metal Pegmatite and Mineral Resources in Africa.”

Speaking during the presentation, President of SLIG, Salim Sillah, said the essence of the meeting was to bring geoscientists together to teach them about the rare metal pegmatite.

He said they brought experts from different countries to teach Sierra Leonean geoscientists about the new development in the mineral, mining and exploration industry, adding that many illegal explorations are ongoing on in the country.

Sillah said the meeting was focused on a research conducted about rare metal pegmatite and mineral resources in Africa.

He noted that geoscientists need to know more about rare earth metal and lithium because they are very important elements that exist only in the rare metal pegmatite.

Sillah said the discovery of rare metal pegmatite was important for the mining sector in Sierra Leone because it would place the country on the world map, adding that the country was the first African country to have discovered rare metal pegmatite.

He added that they decided to invite experts from different countries so that they could share knowledge about the precious mineral with colleague geoscientists in Sierra Leone.

Final year student at Geosciences Department at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, Tigidanke Fofanah, said the presentation was an eye opener because they learnt more about rare metal pegmatites and mineral resources in Africa.

She thanked the institution for a ‘wonderful’ presentation and promised that they would do more to improve the quality of rare metal pegmatites and mineral resources in the country.
