SLFA Interim Chair issues stern warning

TALKING TOUGH … Awoko Sesay gets backing of footballer stakeholders

The interim chairman of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Executive Committee, Alhaji Unisa Alim ‘Awoko’ Sesay has – in his acceptance speech – issued a stern warning to saboteurs or individuals wanting to interfere in the work of the committee.

Sesay, who heads a nine-man interim SLFA Executive Committee following the decision of majority football stakeholders to dissolve the Isha Johansen-led executive on December 20, 2014, said he was humbled and honoured by the confidence reposed in him by the membership to head the committee until they go into election for a new executive in six months’ time.

The founder and owner of Premier League club, Anti Drugs Strikers, maintained that they will stoutly resist “any unpatriotic conduct or interference from anybody or entity”.

“I am satisfied that the action of the stakeholders was in accordance with the SLFA Statutes and in the interest of football,” said Sesay. “I therefore call on everybody to get behind the committee so that much could be achieved within the limited timeframe. I would like to warn against acts of sabotage or interference as the committee buckles down to its work. Such unpatriotic conduct would be stoutly resisted.”

However, the veteran football administrator noted that the committee would welcome constructive dialogue on the development of football in the country, and encouraged all who have “genuine interest in the management of football in the country to start preparing for the next elective congress” to be held within the next six months.

Issuing out another strong warning, Sesay stated: “We will encourage constructive dialogue for the good of the game but we will not negotiate out of fear. The current issue in SLFA is a constitutional matter and we will advice that…all respect the rule of law; that is, the SLFA, FIFA, and CAF statutes.”

He also warned “the dissolved SLFA Executive Committee” to refrain from any further activities, including the expenditure of SLFA funds; an issue he said they will address in due course.
