The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) faction headed by veteran football administrator, Alhaji Unisa Alim ‘Awoko’ Sesay, has welcomed the decision by embattled FIFA president, Joseph Sepp Blatter, to step down from his position as world football chief.
Amidst alarming corruption allegations in FIFA, the group calling itself “the Legitimate SLFA Interim Executive”, also urged the incoming FIFA Executive Committee not to support, condone and pamper football administrations like the Isha Johansen-led SLFA administration.
In a press statement issued on Saturday June 6, the Sesay faction stated: “The reformed FIFA should refrain from supporting, condoning and pampering administrations like the former Isha Johansen led administration in Sierra Leone who, despite numerous calls, has failed to give account, both financially and governance wise, to its members.”
“The SLFA believes that the reformed FIFA should do everything possible and within its power to discourage the conduct of rogue and unfair elections, particularly at the national football administration levels, as it did on the 3rd of August 2013 elections of Isha Johansen as president of the SLFA.”
Despite not yet gaining recognition from FIFA, the Sesay faction said they had issued out the release because “the abortive congress of the SLFA held in Makeni on the 18th April, 2015 was rigged with corrupt practices, including but not limited to the unlawful manipulation and falsification of the delegates’ list, all in a bid to deprive the association of the leadership it desires and deserves”.
