It is an open secret. It is now common to see that your mobile phone will display a number from a local operator when receiving a call from abroad. This phenomenon is called Simbox fraud.
Perpetrators of this fraud, which costs billions to the operators and the government, have over the past six months included Sierra Leone in their playing field. Their criminal activities does not only result in poor quality of service for consumers receiving calls in Sierra Leone but also resulting in loss of revenue for the ICT sector in particular and the government of Sierra Leone in general.
The recent rampant of termination of international calls as local calls, prompted the Sierra Leone Police with the support of Airtel to conduct a raid of suspected sim box sites. The Police were successful in dismantling four (4) active sim box sites in Freetown and Makeni and apprehended eight (8) suspects across all four locations.
While investigations are ongoing, Airtel remains vigilant in monitoring, detecting and providing essential support to the police in locating sim box fraudsters across the country.
Airtel further commits to the provision of quality telecommunications service to its valuable consumers and to the continuous growth and development of the ICT sector.
