Sierra Leone Players Abroad:

Quartet on target in Europe

OCTOBER 21, 2014 By Sahr Morris Jnr.

Four Sierra Leonean players – Alfred Sankoh, Alhaji Kamara, Lansana Kamara and Mohamed Buya Turay – were all on the score sheet over the weekend for their respective clubs in Europe.

In Azerbaijan, midfielder Alfred Sankoh scored from the penalty spot in the 35th minute to help Khazar Lankaran secure a 4-0 home win over FK Baku. The player, who missed Sierra Leone’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations double-header qualifiers against Cameroon, was later withdrawn from the match after the 85th minute.

The three other Sierra Leonean goals were in Sweden where striker Alhaji Kamara aka ‘Adriano’ scored his ninth goal of the season for Norrköping in their 1-2 away win over Gefle in the Swedish top flight league, the Allsvenskan.

In the Swedish third tier league (Division One), midfielder Lansana Kamara – who was an unused sub for Umeå in their last match against Huddinge – celebrated his comeback by scoring one of his team’s goals in their 0-7 thrashing of Vasalund. Kamara, alongside fellow countryman Mohamed Kamanor, played full time.

There was also full time action for defender Ishmael ‘Jor-Jor’ Koroma whose Nyköping side secured a vital 1-2 win away to Huddinge, whilst midfielder Ibrahim Sorghor Kallay played for 80 minutes as his IFK Luleå side grabbed all three points at home with a 5-0 thumping of Skellefteå FF.

There was a bitter-sweet moment for striker Mohamed Buya Turay who opened his Vasteras SK account in the 34th minute but his side went on to lose 3-2 away to AFC United. Turay also could not end the match as he got sent-off in 73rd minute after incurring a second yellow card.

In China, central back Gibril ‘Barrel’ Sankoh’s full time action was not enough to help his side escape defeat as they lose 2-1 to Shanghai Shenxin.

In the English League One, right-back Mustapha Dumbuya featured for 70 minutes for Notts County in their 5-3 victory over Crawley, whilst in League Two, winger Abdulai Bell-Baggie’s 71st minute introduction could not help save Tranmere Rovers from a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United.

In the Finnish top division, Patrick Bantamoi was replaced by Sahlgren in the 46th minute as his Rops side suffered a 1-2 defeat.

In Portugal’s second tier league, Ibrahim ‘Obreh’ Kargbo played full time for Atlético CP in their 3-0 win over Beira Mar.
