Sexual penetration…

Accused sentenced to 5 years imprisonment

June 8, 2016 By Patrick Jaiah Kamara

Alia Kamara, 22, was yesterday sentenced to five years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the offence of sexual penetration of a child under the age of consent.

Kamara, who shed tears after the sentence, was before the High Court on two counts of sexual penetration of two different victims, contrary to the Sexual Offences Act of 2012.

He however denied the other charge, stating that he never knew the victim.

According to the charge sheet, the young man allegedly penetrated his victims on 27 May, 2015 at No.7 SLBC Drive Goderich, west Freetown.

In her plea of mitigation, O.C. Spencer-Coker told the presiding judge, Justice Monfred M. Sesay, that although she was mindful that the offence was grave against womanhood, but the latter should temper justice with mercy since her client did not wasted the time of the court in pleading guilty.

Meanwhile, State Prosecutor Joseph K. Sesay declined to continue with the other charge on the grounds that he was yet to summon witnesses.

The matter was adjourned to 14 July, 2016.

The judge said the five years term was inclusive of the time spent on remand.

In another development in the same court room, Abu Bakarr Sankoh, 28, also answered to the offence of burglary and larceny.

The accused allegedly broke and entered into the dwelling house of one Adama Kamara and stole six bags of charcoal, three cooking pots and other property, all costing Le373,000.

The matter was adjourned to 14 June, 2016 for sentencing.
