Security officer testifies in PCMH child theft matter

 Security personnel attached to the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH), Hassan Conteh, alias Father, yesterday testified against two accused persons, Phyllis Steven and Regina Steven, who allegedly stole a one day old baby boy at Ward 4 in the facility.

While testifying before Magistrate Dr.Abou Bhakarr Binneh-Kamara of the Freetown Magistrates’ Court No.1, Conteh identified the 1st accused (Phyllis Steven) as a sister attached to the hospital, adding  that on 5, September, 2016, he went to take up duty at around 7:30am.

He told the court that he conducted his normal routine checks and later took over duty at the main gate at 9: am.

He testified that he was charged with the responsibility to supervising Ward 2, 3, and 4, as well as the labour Ward.

He continued that the 1st accused informed him that someone was coming to visit her, and that he should open the gate for the said visitor.

The witness explained that after the 1st accused left the gate, the second accused came and asked  him to open the gate, stating  that she went to discharge a patient at Ward four (4),but he refused  to open.

“The second accused was insisting on me to open the gate, when the 1st accused came and told me to let her inside. Both of them went to Ward 4,” he testified

He further testified that he later saw the second accused person in the company of the 1st accused and other nurses, holding a baby and a discharge card and headed towards the immunization department.

He stated that at around 4:pm, he heard a loud noise from Ward 4 that a child had got missing, and that on the following day, he was invited to the Eastern police station to make statement.

Being cross examined by defense counsel, Elvis Kargbo, the witness told the court that he has worked as a security personnel at the PCMH for six years. 

The accused were before the court on two counts of conspiracy and kidnaping, contrary to law. According to the particulars of offence, the accused persons on Monday 5 September, 2016 at PCMH, conspired with unknown individuals to commit a felony to wit kidnaping.

The particulars continued that the accused persons on the same date and place unlawfully took away a one day old baby boy against his will.

The matter continues on 17 November, 2016 for further hearing.
