Sankoh wants to end career with FC Groningen

January 30, 2015 By Sahr Morris Jr.

Sierra Leone and Henan Jianye FC defender, Gibril ‘Barrel’ Sankoh, has expressed his desire to end his football career with Holland-based club FC Groningen.

The former Groningen defender who now plays for Henan Jianye in the Chinese top flight league wants to close his football career in the Euroborg – a place where he spent five years before moving to Germany.

“If I ever return to the Netherlands, of course I want to play football at FC Groningen,” said the 31-year-old footballer who is presently in the Netherlands. “I would like to conclude with FC Groningen, but I do not know if they are waiting for me.”

With the Chinese league presently on winter break, Sankoh was in Bovensmilde to work on his fitness in the gym of Dutch boxing champion Ben Tingen.

The Sierra Leone international who last year turned down several calls to represent the national team, Leone Stars during the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, played between 2005 and 2010 at FC Groningen. After five-and-a-half years of service, he and the club could not agree on a new contract. He continued his career at FC Augsburg in Germany where he played for three years before moving to China where he has played in the past two seasons.

The rocky defender made his Leone Stars debut on September 8, 2012 at the age of 29 during an Africa Cup of Nations qualification double header matches against Tunisia. He got a red card in the second match on 13 October.
