Salone swimmers prepare for Zone II championship

Six Sierra Leonean swimmers are currently undergoing intensive training session at the National Stadium swimming pool in preparation for next week’s fifth edition of the Zone II African swimming championship in Dakar, Senegal.

The team championship is expected to commence from 26-29 May and the Sierra Leonean delegation will travel by road to Dakar this weekend.

According to secretary general of Sierra Leone Swimming, Diving and Water Polo Association, Mohamed Turay, the six swimmers – Osman Kamara, Binturabie Jalloh, Morris Beale, Ruth Turay, Saudi Kamara and Ishamil Koroma – would compete in the different swimming strokes: freestyle stroke, breaststroke, backstroke and the butterfly stroke.

He said: “For the first time Sierra Leonean swimmers will do the 4×100 meters free style and the 4x 100m mix relay which includes male and female.”

According to Turay, over nine countries, including Nigeria, Ivory Coast, the competition’s host Senegal, Gambia and Sierra Leone will assemble at the ten lane pool in Dakar that accommodate over 2000 spectators.

One of the swimmers, Mohamed Turay, said they hope to increase their Olympic qualification number in the competition. “We hope to get more qualification spot for the Olympic Games in this tournament because we already have two qualifiers for the Rio Games.”

Other members expected to join the delegation to Dakar are Coach Bobson Mansaray, Technical Director Victor Mansaray, Chaperon- Fanta Sesay, Medical-Manso Sankoh and Welfare Officer-Sheku Conteh.
