Five Sierra Leonean kids from the Craig Bellamy Foundation Academy (CBF) over the weekend helped the Dunn High School capture the CIF Division 7 boys’ soccer championship after defeating Condor League rival Laguna Blanca 2-1.
The five boys – Rodney Michael, Kelsey Sullivan, Dennis Cole, Sahid Conteh and Peter Kargbo, who were all from the CBF academy – played a huge role in scoring goals which helped the team reach the final since the commencement of the championship.
And on the final day, striker Sahid Conteh’s breakaway goal in the second half proved to be the game-winner for Dunn High School as they lifted the CIF Division 7 title for the very first time. Their last title came in 2006 when they won the division 6.
It was Rodney Michael who opened the scoring as he threaded his way through the Laguna Blanca defence to score in the fifth minute of the match.
The play of the night took place in the 57th minute when Conteh picked off a throw-in at midfield and raced down the field ahead of everyone and scored to make it 2-0, but Laguna Blanca pulled one back, thanks to a Damian Nunez goal.
It was the third meeting between the two sides after previous ties ended 3-3 and then 1-1 during the regular season.
Match winner Conteh said the final was like the previous two matches.
“This game was a lot like the first two times we played them,” he said. “The last 10, 15 minutes they kept attacking us.”
