Salone faces Mauritania in CHAN qualifiers

April 8, 2015 By Sahr Morris Jr.

Sierra Leone’s home based national team has been drawn to face Mauritania in the qualifiers for a place in the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The draw, which was conducted by the CAF General Secretary, Hicham El Amrani and the 2nd Vice President, Almamy Kabele Camara, will see the home based Leone Stars squad travel to Mauritania for the first leg tie before hosting them in Freetown (provided the CAF ban is lifted).

Like Sierra Leone, the two other countries – Guinea and Liberia – who are also serving a CAF ban on hosting all international matches on home soil due to the Ebola epidemic, have been drawn to face each other.

The first leg qualifying matches will be played on June 19-21 and according to CAF, all qualifying matches are expected to climax within August 28-30 where 15 teams will emerge to join host nation Rwanda for the finals which are scheduled for January 16-February 7.

Sierra Leone was eliminated from the 2014 tournament in the preliminary round by neighbouring Guinea, thanks to the away goals rule after both sides played to a 1-1 draw at the then National Stadium in Freetown. The earlier fixture ended goalless at the September 28 Stadium in Conakry.

The CHAN tournament is exclusively designed for local based players on the continent.
