Reverend docked for Le7m

SEPTEMBER 9, 2014 By Patrick J. Kamara

Reverend Floyd Samba Patrickson was yesterday sent on remand at the Pademba Road maximum security prison for allegedly defrauding one Joseph Kanu the sum of seven hundred million Leones (Le700,000,000) by falsely pretending that he had a land for sale.

The ‘man of God’ was arraigned before Magistrate Santigie Bangura of the Pademba Road Magistrates’ Court No.5 to answer to three counts of conspiracy, malicious damage and obtaining money by false pretence contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone.

The accused on Thursday June 12, 2014 allegedly conspired to commit a crime to wit felony. In count two, he was accused of damaging a corrugated iron sheet structure valued five million Leones, and in count three he allegedly obtained seven million, five hundred thousand Leones from the complainant on a date unknown in 2003 at Lakka in the York Rural District by falsely pretending that he had a land for sale.

Counsel for the accused, Emmanuel Teddy Koroma, told the court that his client is a responsible citizen and a reverend father who has credible sureties that are ready to stand on his behalf. He said they are ready to refund the complainant’s money and that his client never obtained the said money by false pretence.

“My client is a reverend father and a responsible citizen that will not jump bail. My lord, bail is your discretion; we are craving your indulgence to admit him to bail pursuant to Section 79(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act of 1965. We are ready to refund the money now, there was nothing like obtaining money by false pretence,” lawyer Koroma submitted.

However, Magistrate Bangura was not convinced and remanded the accused in custody until the matter comes up on September 10.

In a related development in the same court, one Osman Bangura was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to violating the Public Emergency Act of 2004.

Bangura was on Saturday August 30 caught riding a motorbike at Spur Loop junction after the stipulated 7:00pm.
