President Ernest Bai Koroma has rendered full sponsorship to the country’s top Paralympic table tennis player, George Wyndham, to compete in the forthcoming Lignano Masters Open tournament in Lignano, Italy.
The full sponsorship package was not revealed but according to Wyndham, who is presently ranked third in Africa, it will cover his air-fare, accommodation and per-diem.
“President Koroma’s assistance has come at the right time and I am grateful for that. This shows my effort over the years in representing Sierra Leone with support from Mercury International has not gone in vain,” he said.
Wyndham, who will turn 25 years later this month, is expected to compete against the top five players from each continent as the tournament itself will run from March 17 to 21.
The Lignano Masters Open will be organized by the Italian Table Tennis Association under the auspices and authority of the International Table Tennis Federation (Para Table Tennis Division). The event will be conducted in accordance with the current Laws of Table Tennis, the Regulations for International Competitions and specific PTT directives (which may be amended from time to time).
After failing to attend last year’s US Open Paralympics Championship in December 2014 due to the country’s current Ebola crisis, this will mark Wyndham’s – who already has six medals in his cabinet – first international tournament in 2015.
