Phone mechanics testify in former CDS murder trial

Two prosecution witnesses who identify themselves as phone mechanics yesterday testified before Magistrate Dr.Abou Bhakarr Binneh-Kamara in the ongoing murder trial of the former Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Retired Lieutenant General, Samuel Omar Williams, who was shot dead at his Devil Hole residence last year.

It could be recalled that the retired army chief was robbed and murdered at his residence in the Waterloo Rural district. The accused persons allegedly attacked his residence, armed with shotgun and robbed him of properties worth millions of Leones before killing him.

Police has charged four accused persons to court including: Ibrahim Kalokoh aka Kate/Fayai , Festus Mansaray , Alhaji Steven Bangura, and Alpha Umaru on four counts of conspiracy, robbery with aggravation and murder contrary to laws of the Sierra Leone.

Yesterday, the prosecution presented two witnesses before the court Oladele Cole and Issa Kamara, who are both phone mechanics.

Cole testified that he met with the first accused person in December, 2016, at a place called ‘Belgium’ and that the former approached him that he has an Iphone for sale.

The witness said he told the accused that the phone was locked with a security code and could only be opened with the help of the owner.

“But the accused told me that to give him three hundred thousand Leones for the phone which I did, the witness said. 

The witness said he was arrested by police officers on February 17, 2017 whilst he was at his business place and was taken to the station where he made statement.

Kamara on the other hand said he was a phone mechanic at Shell Company, when one of his friends,Tamu, called him and told him that he wanted to see him.

The witness said Tamu and the second accused met him and showed him an Ipone for sale.

“I told the accused that the Iphone has an icloud account and could not be opened without the owner’s consent. He forced me to buy the phone and I gave him three hundred thousand Leones. Later, I was arrested and asked to make statement at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department,” he testified.

The charge sheet stated that the accused persons on 22nd December, 2016, at Umuels Drive, Devil Hole, in the Waterloo Judicial district, being armed with short gun, robbed the deceased, Retired Lieutenant General, Samuel Omar Williams of two iphone6, valued Le14, 700, 000, one Black Sierratel mobile Phone valued Le200,000, one Samsung Galaxy edge valued Le11, 025,000, one silver MAC Book PRO Apple Laptop computer valued Le8, 820,000, one sunny blue-black computer valued Le5, 880, 000, one silver colour portfolio valued Le200,000, and other properties all to the total value of Le56, 355,000, properties of the deceased.

The particulars of offence stated that the accused persons on the aforementioned date at Umuels Drive, Devil Hole, in the Waterloo Judicial district, murdered the deceased.

The matter was adjourned to March 28, 2017.
