Former Sierra Leone United Nations Ambassador and Chairperson of the Independent Media Commission (IMC), Ambassador Alieu Ibrahim Kanu and two others- Alfred Kallon and Suliman Issa Turay, who were accused of illegally issuing service and diplomatic passports to the wrong persons, have been put on stiff bail by Justice Miatta Samba.

The judge ordered that each accused must be bailed by two sureties who are residents in the Western Area of Sierra Leone, and that one of the sureties must provide the original copy of a title deed valued five hundred millions Leones.

She also ordered the accused persons not to leave the country without the approval of the court, and that they must surrender all their traveling documents to the Master and Registrar of the High Court, who should approve their bail.

The Anti-Corruption Commission alleges that on diverse dates between January 2015 and March 2018, Ambassador Kanu; Alfred Kallon, Senior Human Resources Officer at the Administrator and Registrar-General Office and one Suliman Issa Turay, Head of Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, used influence to award the state passport to the wrong people.

The trio were arraigned in the High Court of Sierra Leone on charges ranging from Conspiracy to commit a corruption offense, peddling influence contrary to Section 31(3) and abused of office, contrary to the Anti-Corruption Act of 2008.

The first accused, Alfred Kallon is arraigned on thirty four counts of abuse of office, the second, Alieu Ibrahim Kanu is before the court on five counts of peddling influence, while  the third is charged with three counts of abuse of office, but all of them have denied the charges.

Upon arraignment, the ACC prosecutor, Sariffon Harleston, could not proceed because he has not served the accused persons with the necessary documents with which he intends to pursue his case. Also, he has not drafted the application for the accused persons to be tried by judge alone.

However, Justice Samba put the accused persons on bail following an application made by their respective counsels.
