Members of Parliament yesterday graciously recognised the Executive of the Sierra Leone Football Association and Leone Star players for qualifying to the AFCON 2022 that would be held in Cameroon, Yaoundé, after a daunting period of 25 years.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Sports, Hon. Alusine K. Alu-Conteh, commended the President for the tremendous support given towards the sport sector.

He commended the President of the Sierra Leone Football Association and his technical team, Head Coach -John Keister and his deputy, among other stakeholders, for the support.

He noted that it was not an easy task for the Leone Stars team to qualify for the Cameroon 2022, stating that they recognised the effort applied by the Ministry of Sport, National Sport Agency, Sierra Leone Football Association and the players.

He said despite the in-fights among the football family, the committee tried as best as it could to bring peace within the family through the help of the Speaker of Parliament, the leadership and other MPs.

“When the final whistle was blown in Guinea, I shed tears because for 25 years we didn’t qualify and people were hoping that this African Nations Cup will bring moral to the country. We want to thank all those that supported the team from Guinea to stadium. My advice to those who are governing football is to try as best as possible to make use of this opportunity,” he said.

He urged all football stakeholders to put aside all those things that have been bringing confusion as the country only has less than six months to go to Cameroon.

He said it high time they began to identify qualified players in order to showcase their talent out there and make sure to support the Sport Ambassador to choose qualified players.

“Sierra Leone can surely make it.Let us not politicize the qualifications, don’t forget the citizens, more support should be given. I am appealing that Parliament together with other football stakeholders do all it can so that the players will bring the trophy to the country,” he urged.

On his part, Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Abass C. Bundu, congratulated officials of the ministry, the executive of SLFA and the payers for the magnificent performance, stating that they should go to Cameroon with the expectation that Parliament is strongly with them.

He said there is a hidden promise that will be disclosed if they bring the trophy into the country.

“You can do it and we wish you good luck and best wishes to all of you.”
