The Ombudsman of Sierra Leone, Justice Edmond Cowan, will today meet with the senior officer corps of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and the hierarchy at Ministry of Defense, as part of an ongoing outreach and educational awareness programme to government ministries, departments and agencies.
Also, according to a release from the Office of the Ombudsman, similar meetings have been earmarked with the Mayor, Councilors and administrative staff of the Freetown City Council, as well as senior officers of the Sierra Leone Police and the Sierra Leone Prisons Service.
The office of the Ombudsman is relatively new in Sierra Leone’s new democratic dispensation, with many individuals knowing very little about the statutory mandate of the Office.
“The aim of the sensitisation visits is to raise awareness on the mandate and role of the Office of the Ombudsman,” the release noted, adding that the mandate includes investigating and resolving complaints of maladministration against public officials and institutions in Sierra Leone.
The sensitization visits, the release further said, is to improve on the cooperation with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), to raise the issue of the slow responsiveness by some MDAs to queries and investigations by the Office, and to gauge the level of compliance with government agencies to the Ombudsman’s investigations.
