The President of the Academic Staff Association (ASA) of Njala University, Claude Demon last night confirmed to concord Times that all academic Staff at the university will go on industrial strike action today (Thursday 27th August 2020).
Demon told this medium on telephone that despite government has promised to engage them tomorrow (Friday,28 August 2020) they would still proceed to down tools as the longwinded negligence of government in addressing their welfares ranging from none payment of leave allowance; none payment of retirement benefit dating far back 2014; payment of increment to lecturers that have been confirmed promoted since October 2019; to annual increment not applied for six years among others is overdue.
The president stressed that until their compounding problems which bother around welfare issues of all Academic Staff are addressed, they would not resume work.
“We still hold on our position to go on strike tomorrow even though government has contacted us and invited us at a meeting which will be held on Friday. We will surely embark on a strike action on Thursday until our demands are met,” he said.
The press statement issued on August 21 by the office of the Secretary General, Njala Academic Staff Association, indicated that the academic staff at the university has been going through a perennial challenges ranging from lack of infrastructure and basic amenities including staff quarters, staff offices, lecture rooms, poor roads network, internet facilities, equipped libraries and laboratories among other challenges.
The statement further stated that Njala Academic Staff Association has made series of attempts to meet President Maada Bio with the view to addressing the issues by giving them bailout, but all have proved futile, adding that Njala University is in great financial recess which should be a great concern to all senior, supporting, and junior staff.
“ASA executive held a meeting on the 4th of August 2020 that the strike action suspended on the 8th January 2019 be revoked if authorities fail to address these issues. Based on the above, ASA will resume full industrial action on Thursday 27th August 2020 at 7:00 am if nothing is done to address these issues. During the strict action, ASA will not engage in any University function (s) as prescribed in their appointment letters until all demands stated here are fully addressed’’, the release concludes.
