Moyamba District Council reads 2014 budget

By Francis Ndanema in Moyamba

The long-anticipated budget of the Moyamba District Council has been finally read to the public by Chairman, Professor Herbert Bob Kandeh.

Before going into the details of the budget, Chairman Prof. Kandeh said the delay in reading the budget was deliberate, so as to ensure it reflects the felt needs of the people.

However, he revealed that Council was unable to persuade officials at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development to modify the budget in accordance with the District Development Plan.

He said approximately Le11 billion was allocated to the council and devolved sectors in the district for this year, and that government would provide Le7 billion, which represents 60% of the total budget, while donors and council would also provide Le3 billion and at least Le1 billion respectively.

Chairperson of the occasion, Madam Teresa Lamin, earlier underscored the importance of budget reading to demonstrating public transparency, and called on residents of the district to cooperate with the council by paying their taxes.

Civil society representative, George Gbanga, described the budget as a positive step towards human development in the district, while Tamba Gbetuwa urged non-state actors to demonstrate their oversight functions of tracking expenditure flow in 2014.
