Paramount chiefs of the sixteen chiefdoms had chosen him on behalf of the people months ago as the person they want to lead them in the political arena, a move which was eventually endorsed by President Ernest Bai Koroma.

The district is almost notorious for its die-hard support to the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and that has led to them being the only district left behind in terms development.

Mr Vandi’s endorsement as the new political head is seen by many as strategic and one that will take development to the district as he has been charged with the responsibility of overturning the status quo in favour of the ruling All People’s Congress (APC).

During his brief statement, Mr Vandi- a native of Giema Dama chiefdom, called for togetherness from all and sundry, irrespective of political affiliations in order for development to be visible once again in that part of the country.

“I accept this appointment to lead you politically with open hands and let me assure that with your support, we can change Kenema for the better. Kenema will surely rise again under my leadership. Let us put aside our political differences and work towards the development of the district,” he said.

According to him, political disagreements over the years has been the main cause of the present state of Kenema, which is the district headquarter town, but assured that under his watch, things will improve for the better.

As a proud member of the APC, the Deputy Finance Minister encouraged the people of Kenema to join the party because it is a party for everyone.

Earlier, paramount Chief of Dodo Chiefdom, Foday Kpakra Faba said the appointment of Mr Vandi was as a result of the efforts of the sixteen chiefs in the district.

He said they decided to have him as their political head because of the strong believe in his ability and capacity to take development to the district after the death of Joseph Bandabla Dauda.

“I want to assure you of the full support of all the paramount chiefs,” he assured.

Resident Minister East, Karamoh Kabba said: “This has never happened anywhere in this country to have all paramount chiefs in a district coming together in solidarity of one man to practically anoint him as their political head.”

Also speaking was the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Sidi Yayah Tunis, who told his colleague to consider himself lucky and blessed, and urged him to embrace his new position with open hands by working assiduously to ensure transformation in the district.

He urged the people to transfer the love and support they gave the late B.S Massaquoi and J.B. Dauda for better development.

“You can only succeed when you embrace everyone irrespective of their political affiliation. You have to lead in a way that you will not let down the paramount chiefs, people and the party who have entrusted you with this power,” he urged.

With the unprecedented display of solidarity and support during the event, the comments from those inside and out of the District Council Hall is that Momoh Vandi is being position to have the running mate slot of the APC to gather more support in the east for the party.
