Man jailed 72 months for stealing gold wrist watch

October 31, 2017 By Elizabeth A. Kaine

Magistrate Santigie Bangura, presiding at the Pademba Road Court No. 1 yesterday Monday (30th October 2017) sentenced one Abdulai Jalloh to seventy- two month (four years) at the Male Correctional centre on Pademba Road for stealing a gold wrist watch worth eleven million Leones.

The convict was before Magistrate Bangura on two counts of Larceny contrary to section 2 of the Larceny Act of 1916.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Eric Deen, alleges that the convict on Tuesday 3rd August, 2017, along Lumley Beach Road, Aberdeen in Freetown, stole one gold wrist watch valued eleven million four hundred thousand Leones and one gold ring valued two million five hundred and eighty thousand Leones, plus cash of five million Leones, all to the total sum of twenty million Leones, properties of  one Ibrahim Sorie Conteh, whilst in the custody of one Lansana Conteh.

In his judgment, Magistrate Bangura said the prosecution produced four witnesses in presenting their case against the accused before the court including two formal and two factual witnesses.

He said all the witnesses testified against the accused in court and that they were cross examined by the defense lawyer and on the closure of the prosecution case, the accused told the court that he relied on his statement made to the police for his defense and that he would not call any witness to testify on his behalf.

Magistrate Bangura further that having gone through the evidences adduced by the prosecution and the statement of the convict on which he relied for his case before the court, he had come to the conclusion that the allegations made against the former are true.

He further that in his statement to the police, the convict admitted to the allegations that he did steal from the complainant’s bag -the sum of one million two hundred thousand Leones (Le1.2 million) and not (Le 5million) as alleged.

“I therefore hold the prosecution to have proved the charges against the accused beyond all reasonable doubt and I hereby found you guilty as charged and you are sentence to seventy- two month imprisonment,” Magistrate Bangura ruled.
