Makeni riot matter: Defense counsel absent on two consecutive occasions

After the testimony of the ninth prosecution witness on Monday, 11th January, Detective Inspector Nathaniel Williams attached to Crime Writer Unit, Criminal Investigations Department headquarter, defense counsel, Wara-Serry Kamal, was absent for the second time to cross examine the witness.

State counsel, Yusifu I. Sesay, told the court that he did not receive any information from the defense counsel as to why she was not in court.

However, Magistrate Ngegba said he would give her one more adjourned date and if she fails to appear before him, he would proceed with the matter because it a preliminary investigation.

He adjourned the matter to the 25th January, 2021.

It could also be recalled that on Friday 17th July, 2020, a riot took place in Makeni city where 13 accused persons were arrested and remanded in Pademba road prison for almost six months now without bail.

The 13 accused persons including Amadu Koroma alias Kondo, Idrissa Koroma, Thamiu Kamara and ten others,were charged with seven counts of conspiracy to commit felony, carrying offensive weapon, disorderly behaviour, among other offences, but they earlier denied the charges.

The state alleges that the accused persons between Friday 17th and Saturday 18th July, 2020, within the Makeni City, Bombali District, conspired with other persons unknown to commit felony to wit carrying offensive weapons.

The state prosecutor also claims that the accused persons also injured innocent people and maliciously damaged property worth thirty nine million, seven hundred thousand Leones, belonging to the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) regional office at No.7 Kamal Street.

He also alleges in count seven that the first accused maliciously damaged a property belonging to the Electricity Generation and Transmission Company (EGTC) at Nicole Street.
