In his speech at the Freetown Gulf Club on Saturday, Managing Director Arne Johansen said they were celebrating the Health and Safety Week with other members of Heidelberg Cement Company worldwide because safety was paramount in what they do.

He said their aim was to get zero injuries in the workplace, and urged staff to prioritise safety in their daily routine.

Mr. Johansen noted that the four kilometre walk along the Beach Road was a good indicator of safety and healthy living by workers.

“We produce high quality cement, but in a safely manner,” said the LEOCEM boss, adding that production could only be productive where workers are assured of a safe and healthy environment, which is conducive and accident free.

Ken P. Sondia, Safety, Health and Environment Manager at LEOCEM, disclosed that they have put in place very good safety measures to avoid unnecessary accident.

He explained that workers are provided with protective gears, while the Freetown Fire Force are called periodically to teach workers about how to prevent against fire accident at work, adding that there had been zero accidents since they started practicing the safety measures.
