Legal Link has on Monday 8th March, 2021, celebrated the International Women’s Day, at Africell American Corner in Freetown.

The celebration which coincided with their 1st National conference themed “women and their journey towards leadership in Sierra Leone, opportunities, challenges and prospect” was geared towards inspiring women to stand up firm so that their voices can be heard.

According to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Legal Link, Barrister Rashid Dumbuya, the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day was a deliberate attempt to challenge women challenge the unchallengeable.

He commended the past and current government for putting women at the centre of governance through the enactment of laws and policies.

”It is true that a lot has been done for example, we have in Sierra Leone a gender policy, a Ministry of Gender Affairs, a Sexual Offences Act, Domestic Violence Act, a Customary Married and Divorce Act, a Sexual Offences Model Court, and the Hands off our Girls, an initiative of the First Lady,’’ Lawyer Dumbuya said.

He added that despite placing women in prominent positions in the Legislative, Executive and Judicial, the act of discrimination still remains a challenge.

“Many reputable women that are there to cross the line have faced embarrassment and their character has been questionable.

That is why women must stand up, fight and create favourable conditions for themselves and not to allow themselves to be maltreated,” he lawyer added.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Sylvia Olyinka Blyden deliberated on so many problems women are going through in present day Sierra Leone.

“Women have been figured out as the weaker vessels; women are being criticized and this criticism is coming from our society that does not accept or believe that women can stand up and challenge a man in public. It is an unfavourable activity!” she said

Dr. Blyden said there are many men secret societies that do believe that women should not be entertained.

She noted that women’s lives are being controlled, on what to think and what not to do, where to go and where they should not, where to talk and where they should not talk, among others.

“Society has made me go through a lot of hassling, unnecessary molestations, humiliations and through all of it, I smile. I am not weak. I am strong minded. I did not allow the bad opinion of others and criticisms of others affect me,”she said

She concluded that she has come out more stronger ,more tougher and more taller than before and that women should have the fear of the Lord and must have courage to speak up rightly.
