Presiding magistrate at the Freetown Magistrates’ Court No.2, Komba Kamanda, yesterday remanded at the Pademba Road maximum security prison one Sahid Conteh, also known as John Kanu, for obtaining money by false pretence.
The accused person was arraigned on two counts of conspiracy to defraud and larceny contrary to Section 32(1) of the Larceny Act of 1916.
The prosecution alleged that on 12 September, 2013, at No.5 Wellington Street, the accused conspired with unknown persons to defraud a Chinese national, Wang Zhang, the sum of US$16,000, equivalent to Le70.4 million, by false pretence.
While testifying in court, Yang Guang Qing said he recognized the accused and recalled on 12th September, 2013, when he accompanied the complainant – Wang Zhang – to the aforementioned address and gave the accused the sum of US$16,000 in respect of rent for a house located at Aberdeen, west of Freetown.
Mr. Yang told the court that after they moved into the house some people approached them and identified themselves as true owners of the house and asked that they should quit.
He said they reported the matter to the Aberdeen police station.
Also testifying, Detective Police Constable 4013 Mohamed Jusu, who is attached to the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters, said he knew the accused and that he recalled on 13 September, 2013 when a fraud matter was assigned to him for investigation.
He said he and one Inspector S. Kamara took voluntary statement from the accused person.
He said the accused person was charged with the offence of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence.
The matter continues on 29 October.
