Lactating mother remanded for murder

July 14,2017 By Memunatu Bangura & Yusufu Bangura

Justice Komba Kamanda of the Freetown High Court yesterday (13th July, 2017) remanded thirty one years old Fatmata Koroma, a lactating mother, who allegedly murdered one Sama Bangura.

The accused was charged with one count of murder contrary to law.

The particulars of offence stated that the accused, on Sunday 19th June, 2017, at the Princess Christiana Maternity Hospital (PCMH), Cottage in Freetown, did murder the deceased.

The accused person was represented by Lawyer I .P. Mamie, who applied for bail, stressing the condition of the accused person.

Lawyer Mamie told the Bench that he was aware that the matter would not proceed because there were no jurors in court for proceeding, stating that the accused has been on remand over a long period.

“The accused person has well been in remand since she was pregnant and has now given birth to a child and was still in prison,” he said.

He pleaded with the judge to grant bail to the accused person, noting that she was in prison with her child, who, he argued, was already stigmatized.

Justice Komba Kamanda replied that it was the responsibility of the State to put things in place and make arrangement for an accused in such condition.

“The State should make arrangement to take pregnant accused persons to a separate place after birth even when on remand,” he said.

The matter was prosecuted by State Counsel, Y. I. Sesay and the matter was adjourned to 20th July, 2017, for further hearing.
