Kono Students issue Blyden ultimatum

…for facebook vitriolic

By Mohamed Massaquoi

The National Kono Student Union, KONSU, has issued an ultimatum to the Special Executive Assistant, SEA, to President Ernest Bai Koroma, for what they referred to as her “demeaning and provocative” statements against the people of Kono, adding their disgust over the fact that an aide to the president was bent on preaching tribalism on a social media (facebook), in her penchant to incite the rest of the Sierra Leonean society against the Kono people.

The students, during a press conference held at the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, SLAJ. headquarters in Freetown, claimed that on diverse dates, Dr Sylvia Olayinka Blyden made scathing comments against the good image and integrity of the Kono people, one of the biggest ethnic groups in the eastern region, and with illustrious sons and daughters including Vice President Chief Samuel Sam Sumana, First Lady, Madam Sia Nyama Koroma, Minister of Local Government, Madam Diana Konomani-Kabbah, and a host of other government officials.

Konsu national president, Sahr Charles said the derogatory and berating comments are seriously considered as a calculated attempt by Blyden to present the people of Kono as stupid and irresponsible.

“It could be recalled that on the 29th of March 2014 at 02. 32 hours, Blyden posted on her facebook page thus: There will always be smart people and stupid people in any tribe. The tribe which has more smart people than stupid ones will progress and make their land a place of envy. The tribe with over-abundance of stupid people will not be hard to detect. A simple visit to their land will expose stupidity. Stupid people are curse to any tribal grouping. Pray God make you nor born na tribe way get more stupid people. On this note, I wish all Kono people a good night,” Charles said in statement read to journalist last Thursday.

He noted that those generic insulting statements against the people of Kono was part of the reason they organised the press conference to inform Serra Leoneans that Blyden has not only insulted their people, but her utterances were an apt portrayal of disrespect for the president who has enormous respect for the people of Kono.

The ultimatum says that Blyden should retract her alleged mendacious and ignorant comments against the Konos, or be banned from stepping feet on the Kono soil.

“In as much as we care less of her political engagement with other people within the district, we considered these statements as a personal attack. It is now clear that Blyden is using her ongoing duel with Dr. David Tam-Baryoh and others as a perfect platform to insult our people. We will not take it lightly and every effort will be made to ensure that she adhered to our ultimatum,” he further said.

Meanwhile, in a snap telephone call to Blyden for her reaction, she said she was in a meeting, but promised to call later.
