Journalism fraternity loses colleag

September 15, 2016

The entire journalism fraternity in Sierra Leone was gripped by shock, dismay and absolute solemnity on Tuesday when news about the death of veteran journalist Samuel John broke.

Mr. John, 63, was an editor at the Awoko newspaper with a distinguished career, initially cutting his teeth as a sports reporter.

Described as “meek and affable” by his colleagues, John was among a breed of journalists who went through the tutelage of late journalism icon Sam Metzger.

Managing Editor of the Awoko newspaper and President of the Sierra Association of Journalists, Kevin Lewis, said in a pensive and brooding mood on Tuesday that the death of John would create a vacuum and constitutes an unforgettable loss to the newspaper.

Meanwhile, media practitioners within and without the country and individuals from all walks life have expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family of the late journalist and staff of Awoko newspaper.
