The National Executive Council (NEC) of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) on Wednesday, 8 November, appointed former flag-bearer aspirant John Oponjo Benjamin to head the Information, Communication and Publicity Committee of the party ahead of the 2018 general elections.
The decision was reached during a NEC meeting in the northern district town of Port Loko where members from all across the country converged to chart the way forward for the forthcoming elections.
SLPP National Secretary General, Umaru Napoleon Koroma, said they established various committees to spearhead their national campaign for the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Council Elections and that the decision to appoint Mr. Benjamin as head of the media was prudent.
“After serious deliberations, we agreed that the National Campaign Committee should be headed by Dr. Alie Kabba; National Fund Raising Committee by Hon. Sidi Tunis; Finance Committee by Babadie Kamara; Legal Support Committee by Anthony Brewah; National Strategic Planning Committee by Prof Lawrence Kamara; Manifesto Committee by Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio; Information, Communication and Publicity Committee by John Oponjo Benjamin, among others,” he said.
He added that the National Secretariat would take disciplinary action against all those who have suspended their membership from the party and or have joined other organisations or political parties whose ideals, policies, philosophies and doctrines are at variance with those of the SLPP.
“The National Secretariat in consultations with the National Policy Council will take into consideration the new boundary delimitations and establishment of new districts and regions to fill in all vacant party executive positions created either by death, resignation or abandonment of office of the respective holders,” he said.
