INGOs boycott parliamentary probe

By Samuel J. Kargbo

Cause Canada and twelve International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs) last week boycotted the special select committee set up by Parliament to investigate the groups, prompting chairman of Committee to threaten serious consequences.

He said the probe is not to witch-hunt against any INGO, but to look into how monies received by the latter on behalf of the people and government of Sierra Leone, were expended.

He maintained that failure to appear before Parliament when summoned was contempt of Parliament, and threatened to invoke relevant sections of the Standing Order and the 1991 to impose penalties on defaulting organizations.

INGOs that boycotted the proceeding include: Cause Canada, Arba Egyptian Medical Development, German Leprosy Tuberculosis, Relief, Conciliation Resources, Africare, Africa Turkey Friendship Society, New Apostolic Clinic, Norwegian Friends, The Kambia Appeal, Center for Health and Appropriate Health Technology, ENGIN and Hand for Africa.

Other Committee member also raised similar concerns that INGOs are not taking the exercise with the seriousness it deserves, and vowed to set a bright example for others to see.
