In Tom Nyuma’s daughter’s murder trial…

Judge issues bench warrant for juror

December 7, 2016 By Hassan Gbassay Koroma

Justice Alusine Sesay (Justice of the Appeal Court) presiding in a matter at the High Court, on Monday issued a bench warrant for Joseph Vandy, a  juror in the murder trial of one Alfred Koroma, who allegedly murdered Sia Nyuma.

According to Justice Sesay, the accused was standing trial for a very serious offence, and that the continuous absence of jurors in court would affect the dispensation of justice.

Thus, he ordered a bench warrant for the juror, whom he said should “be arrested and detained until he appears before me and explain why he was not in court to proceed with the matter. The warrant is returnable on 12 December, 2016.”

The accused was in court for murder. According to State Prosecutor J.A.K. Sesay, he allegedly murdered his girlfriend on Sunday, 7 February, 2016 at No.5 Cassava Farm, Juba Hill in Freetown. The victim, Sia Nyuma, was daughter former military strongman and chairman of Kailahun District Council, late Retired Lt. Col. Tom Nyuma.

The matter is being tried by judge and 12 jurors, in accordance with the criminal code of the country.

Justice Sesay had admonished all 12 jurors to always be in court for trial so as to ensure swift justice.
