- Acting Chairman says allocation will undermine activities
NOVEMBER 28, 2014 By Jariatu Bangura
Officials and Commissioners of the Independent Media Commission (IMC) yesterday appealed to members of the sub-appropriation committee in Parliament to recommend for more funds to be allocated to the media watchdog institution, to enable them undertake activities across the country.
Acting Chairman, Commissioner Sahr M’bayo said the commission was underfunded in 2014 as they were only given Le370 million, although they had requested for Le400 million, which according to him was inadequate and thus rendered it impossible to establish a new office in the eastern part of the country, unlike in Makeni and Bo.
He revealed that they had submitted a request for Le671,584,000 but only Le481 million was approved by the Ministry of Finance for the 2015 financial year.
He said the commission is saddled with many challenges, and that despite being without a substantive chairman, it is still carrying on until it is fully constituted.
His plea received sympathetic hearing from members of the sub-committee, who promised to recommend for additional funds to be allocated to the commission to enable it carry out their statutory functions effectively.
