One of a host of contenders for the position of National Secretary General in the next delegates’ conference of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has said he is not attached to any camp of potential flag-bearers.
Kalilu Ibrahim Totangi said the main goal of an opposition political party is to organise, win elections, and form the next government, and not to form intra-party camps.
Aspirant Totangi said he would maintain a high degree of probity and impartiality if elected National Secretary General in the delegates’ conference later this year; the reason being he has decided to run his campaign alone.
Totangi, who was a key member of the campaign team of failed presidential candidate, Julius Maada Bio in 2012, maintained that efforts to organise the opposition party should be geared towards achieving a common purpose and working towards achieving that goal.
He said he has contributed to the party’s growth and development both at national and local levels, and has been a prominent spokesman and strategic contributor to the party, which has been in opposition since 2007 when it lost to the current ruling party.
“I have put out a platform of things that if elected Secretary General I will focus on membership drive, developing a concrete membership and fundraising database that will involve a strategic process that requires fearless, forthright and selfless leadership,” he said.
He also promised to insist on transparency in manning the affairs of the party during his tenure, adding that he would try as much as possible to imbibe collective leadership in decision-making within the SLPP.
The National Secretary General aspirant said he had served in various capacities in the party, including Secretary in the Washington DC chapter, Secretary of North America and then spokesman for the party in the 2012 elections, adding that his many years of experience place him in a unique position to achieve his objectives.
