A fuel dealer at Tower Hill in Yele town, Tonkolili District, was arrested over the weekend by police officers in the Gbonkolenken Chiefdom for allegedly raping a girl aged between 10 and 14 years.
According to Deputy Line Manager of the Family Support Unit at the Magburaka Police Station, Samuel Foday Sesay, the suspect, Musa Kamara, 20, was caught having sexual intercourse with the girl at a nearby bush on the afternoon of Sunday October 11.
He said the alleged victim is not going to school because her parents, who are poor farmers, could not afford to pay her school fees.
Civic groups in the chiefdom, including the Africa Sport and Entertainment Pioneers, have called on the police to prosecute cases of rape in the chiefdom so that the law will deal with culprits accordingly.
In another development, officers attached at the Panlap police division in Bombali District are investigating the death of a nine-month-old baby who reportedly died through suffocation, according to the local police spokesman, Abdul Rahman Sankoh.
Sankoh said the mother of the child, Sama Kamara, locked the baby in her room without telling anybody, to attend a show on Saturday evening, only to return in the morning and discovered that the baby had died.
He noted that the mother of the deceased has been arrested and helping the police with their investigation.
A resident of the township, Pa Kandeh, said the mother of the deceased had lost three out of six children in similar circumstances.
Meanwhile, the SLP information officer has promised a speedy investigation into the matter and subsequent charging to court once evidence has been collected.
