Arrest warrant for former APC MP
April 30, 2019
Credible sources within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have confirmed to Concord Times that police have issued a warrant of arrest for erstwhile All Peoples Congress (APC) Member of Parliament in Constituency 108, Hon. Dr. Mitchel Sho-Sawyer, for allegedly impregnating a-16-year-old girl.
Police say they have searched everywhere within the Freetown jurisdiction, but the fugitive is yet to be apprehended.
“We have done everything to charge the matter to court, but he is nowhere to be found. We have very strong evidence against him and we have searched everywhere for him. As am speaking, we just came from Hamilton in search of him, but we could not find him,” said the source, who preferred anonymity.
A relative to the victim, Prince Lake, told Concord Times that Sawyer had previously denied impregnating the victim, stating that he would order for a DNA test to be conducted in Ghana to ascertain as to whether he is the one responsible for the pregnancy.
“He told me he would hire a doctor to conduct the DNA test in Ghana, but I declined because he would have done otherewise.I travelled to the United States where I stay and paid for a DNA kit, so that we could conduct the test here.He had at first agreed to provide his sample but has refused to do so when I arrived with the kit,” said Lake.
According to Lake, the victim has already confirmed to the police that the former APC lawmaker is allegedly responsible for the pregnancy.
He told Concord Times that the victim has already given birth and that the baby is a complete replica of Sho.Sawyer.
“My brother, if you compare the photo of the baby and Sho-Sawyer, you will see no difference. The child is a complete replica of Sho-Sawyer,” he alleged.
He claimed that Sho-Sawyer was dating the guardian of the victim and that he had used the opportunity to always abuse the girl at the veranda of their apartment.
The former MP has found himself in the net at a time President Maada Bio had declared rape and sexual violence a national emergency, and that perpetrators of minors would be imprisoned for life.
During the debate for the approval of the state of emergency on rape and sexual violence, APC Members of Parliament strongly kicked against the motion and even challenged in a letter signed by its leader in parliament that the approval did not represent the views of the APC.
Meanwhile, two perpetuators including a teacher have been imprisoned for life after being found guilty for rape and other sexual offences.
However, Concord Times made several efforts to reach Hon.Sho-Sawyer through his mobile phone, but his number was constantly switched off. It is unclear as to whether he is within the Sierra Leone jurisdiction because he holds a US passport as dual citizen. But according to the sources within the CID, his photo has been circulated to aid his possible arrest.
