The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED) in partnership with the European Union commemorated Europe Day on May 9th at the MoPED office, marking the occasion with the launch of the ‘EU For You Bus’ tour.
Scheduled from May 9th to May 23rd, 2024, the tour will traverse various regions including Freetown, Port Loko, Kambia, Kono, Bo, Pujehun, Kenema, Kailahun, Moyamba, and Waterloo.
Its primary objective is to facilitate the EU’s evaluation of their funded projects and engage directly with the beneficiaries.
During his keynote speech, Ambassador Manuel Muller, the European Union’s envoy in Sierra Leone, expressed satisfaction at reaching this milestone, highlighting the EU’s extensive achievements since its inception in 1957.
He underscored the EU’s contributions to peace, freedom of movement for citizens within the EU, and substantial development aid worldwide.
Ambassador Muller emphasized the significance of the bus tour as an opportunity for EU officials to interact with project beneficiaries in collaboration with the Sierra Leonean government, aiming to understand project progress, challenges, and provide necessary support.
Ambassador Muller reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting the Sierra Leonean government’s priorities, particularly focusing on initiatives such as ‘Feed Salone’ in agriculture, and improving livelihoods, especially for women and children. Minister Kenyeh Barlay of MoPED echoed Ambassador Muller’s sentiments, commending the EU’s contributions across various sectors including health, education, agriculture, and environmental conservation.
She announced her participation in the tour, expressing eagerness to witness firsthand the impact of EU-funded projects.
