‘Education sector is a big mess’

- SLPP MP blasts

Sierra Leone People’s Party member of parliament representing Constituency 75 in the Bo District, Hon. Hellen Kuyembeh, on Tuesday slammed the education sector in the country as a big mess.

Hon. Kuyembeh recalled the presidential address to parliament where the President mentioned education as very much paramount to the country’s development, but according to her, the sector “is going backward”.

She observed that it was legislated in 2009 that pupils who do not clearly pass their BECE exams should not attempt the WASSCE examinations, but that such a law is never being implemented.

“Should it be implemented now, it would be a disservice to parents who have already paid their children’s fees for the said exams,” she said, adding that preventing pupils from attempting the exams would create serious social problems, especially for the girl child, as well as resulting to an increase in teenage pregnancy and early marriage.

The MP from Bo District alleged that many principals do receive bribes from children and that it would be better to strengthen the monitoring system that would help improve education in the country.
