Paramount Chief Member of [Parliament representing Tonkolili District, P. C. Hon Bai Kurr Kanagbaro Sanka III, on Thursday revealed that ECOMED a public owned entity and not a private property as it is now being operate.
He was speaking at the ratification of the Treaty for the establishment of the African Medicines Agency, which is geared towards setting up of a regulatory agency for African countries.
He said Ecomed, according to initial agreement signed, was owned by the government with 60% shares while some Ghanaian doctors have 20% shares.
“It is just that things have been done by certain individuals who have changed the entire agreement and subsequently transformed it into a private property. There are documents to the effects, and, if the Speaker so wishes, I will provide them,” he assured.
Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Abass Bundu urged the Committee on Health to do follow up on the issue raised by the Paramount Chief.
He also called on the whistle blower to submit the relevant supporting documents to the Committee for further investigation.
“We want to know the true ownership of Ecomed and if we know or discover that it is a true property of government and its people, recommendations will be made by Parliament for it to be transferred to government,” he said.
