Ebola reaches Western Area

- one suspected case confirmed

Director of Disease Control and Prevention in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation yesterday confirmed one suspected case of Ebola fever in the Western Area.

Although the medical professional did not disclose the location of the suspected Ebola patient, he averred that “indeed we have suspected Ebola case in the Western Urban”.

Dr. Amara Jambai, speaking at the conference hall of the ministry, said Kailahun district has recorded 32 suspected cases with 7 confirmed, while 2 persons have already died. He said one case has also been reported in Kono district.

Press men were told at the conference that the Directorate of Disease Control and Prevention has dispatched National Surveillance Officers with additional logistics to support their counterparts in Kenema and Kailahun districts.

It was revealed that there were ongoing discussions between parliamentarians and communities in Kailahun for the latter to allow a team of medical experts to get access to patients and people they may have come into contact with, while medical tents have been positioned at government hospitals in Kenema, Kailahun and Koindu respectively.

Officials further revealed that the European Union and DFID have pledged support to Sierra Leone, while Lakka hospital has been identified as referral hospital for suspected cases.
