Amid reports that Sierra Leone is yet to name its recipient for the Swimming world governing body, FINA athlete’s scholarship program, Secretary General of Sierra Leone Swimming, Diving and Water Polo Association, Mohamed Turay, has confirmed that two athletes have been named for the upcoming program.

Bunturabie Jalloh and Osman Kamara have both been named to participate in the FINA Scholarship program in the new Olympic cycle, which would include 6 to 12 months of training.

The program was designed to provide athletes from less-renowned nations, higher levels of training to help them qualify for major meets – with the latest target being the FINA World Championships from July 15th-30th in Budapest, Hungary.

Popular Swimming website; swimswam.com reported that 35 of the 36 eligible athletes have been named without any Sierra Leonean swimmers and in their list published no Sierra Leone athletes was included, citing that Sierra Leone has yet to name their recipient.

“We have named two of our athletes long ago. This is a surprise to me but I think we will do a reminder to FINA,” Sierra Leone Swimming, Diving and Water Polo Association scribe said.

Athletes have the option to train within their national federation programs in cases, where FINA has approved them, or go to one of the official FINA training centres in either Thamyapura (Thailand) or the Spire Institute (Geneva, Ohio, United States).

FINA awarded “almost 50 scholarships” in the run-up to Rio after the program was launched in May of 2015. Among the tales of success of the program are more than 50 national records broken.

Meanwhile, the Association is mourning the death of their junior male swimmer, Tom Davies aged 18. The young swimmer was attacked last on Thursday night March 30, 2017 at Upper Tengbeh Town area by unidentified youth, who were carrying machetes and knives, after they had forcefully taken away the knapsack he was carrying.

It was alleged that apart from chopping his back with the machetes, he was stabbed in the heart. He died on the way to the hospital and the corpse has been conveyed to the mortuary at Connaught Hospital.
