Commonwealth Youth Games: Team Sierra Leone Heads for Bahamas on Weekend

A-7-man Team Sierra Leone will over the weekend depart Freetown to represent the country at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas.

Sierra Leone will have four athletes including Fatmata Awolo and Foday Kallon for Athletics and Abdulai Sesay and Isha Kanu for Swimming.The four will compete against others for success in the five days competition which will run from July 19-23 at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre in Nassau.

Before the their planned departure, the delegation bade farewell to both the Sports Minister, Ahmed Khanou, his deputy, Ishmael Al-Sankoh Conteh and the rest of Sports Council at  Bishop House, Siaka Steven stadium in Freetown.

The Minister of Sports and his Deputy warmly received the delegation and admonished them to remain focus so that they could represent the country well.

“The youth games are important to breed talents,” Minister Khanou said, adding that he was in discussion with diplomatic missions for technical support which will lead to overseas camping of the team.

The Deputy Minister, Al-Sankoh, warned the youngsters about the need to return home after the games in order to contribute to nation building, while the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (NOC-SLE) Administrative Secretary, Alie Gibril Koroma justifying the selection, said the NOC-SLE contacted both associations and they wished their best for the young athletes.

The delegation also bade farewell to the NOC-SLE executive in which the Committee’s president unveiled the team’s official kits and materials for the competition.

He revealed that Air-tickets and other support have been provided to the delegation by the NOC-SLE.

The other members of the delegation include; President of the Commonwealth Games Sierra Leone, who also doubles as the NOC-SLE boss, Dr. Patrick Coker, Chef de Mission, Unisa Deen Kargbo and Florience Amara. The delegation will travel to Bahamas via USA.
