The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Hu Zhangliang, has told newsmen at their Embassy in Freetown that his country would be declared a poverty free nation next year.

He made the statement on 30th September, 2019, while explaining to the media the activities lined up for the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the People’s Republic of China.

The Chinese envoy said the United Nations benchmarks have clearly shown that the Chinese Government has lifted more than seven hundred million people from poverty level, adding that by next year, all the rural poor population will be relieved of poverty, according to the current standard.

“China has grown into the world’s second largest economy, the largest industrial country, the largest trader in goods and the biggest holder of foreign exchange reserves. And in 2018, China’s GDP was 13.6 trillion US dollars. As a nation, we have contributed close to 30% global economic growth for seventeen consecutive years,” he said.

While responding to questions on the secret behind China’s success, the Ambassador said China’s marvelous success would not have been possible without the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the determined struggle of the Chinese people, and the deep commitment to the mutually beneficial and win-win strategy of opening-up.

He added that the past 70 years has witnessed the CPC remaining true to its original aspirations and keeping to its mission firmly, committed to seeking happiness for the Chinese people and rejuvenating the Chinese nation.

He noted that the CPC has firmly established the people-centered ideology, strengthened and improved the party’s leadership, stick to the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, kept development as the top priority, and advance with the times in term of development concepts and governance leading Chinese people from achieving one victory to another.

“The past 70 years have witnessed the Chinese people moving forward with unremitting efforts and profound enthusiasm. The Chinese people have carried forward the fine tradition of hard work, courage, patriotism, dedication, discipline, and sacrifice,” he explained.

He added that China has always pursued an independent foreign policy of peace and a win-win strategy of opening-up, which aims to foster a new type of international relations and to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

He re-echoed the words of Nelson Mandela who once said that: “The National Day of China is also the National Day of South Africa” because of the role China played to support the anti-apartheid Movement.”

He noted that that the evidences of other countries’s gains from China’s achievement were broadly visible across Africa, thus stating that China has accumulatively sent a total of 26,000 medical staff to African countries to help save lives of more than 300 million Africans, which cost about 110billion US dollars.

“Apart from so many other developments, Africa as a continent has benefited over the years from China. Sierra Leone has bagged big from china- Africa relationship. China became the leading donor in the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone and China has over the years contributed greatly into the infrastructural development in Sierra Leone. For instance, the renovation of the Sierra Leone National Stadium, the Youyi Building, the Toll Road, Bo Stadium and Army Headquarters, to name but a few,” he said.

He said about 4,600 Sierra Leonean students have done short term courses in China, adding that the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone has over the years encouraged credible and well-meaning investors from China to invest in Sierra Leone.

However, the envoy admitted that amid the huge successes, his country has over the years been faced with so many challenges, adding that domestically there are some major drawbacks in the Chinese economy which they need to fix up.

“China as a nation always has enemies who always try to cause problem for the nation. Take for instance the Honkong issue, some Western media were neither objective nor fair in reporting the issues that have to deal with China. But we as a nation always take such people as part of our distractors,” he said.

He said although the country is faced with challenges, they are always focused to pursuing their dreams that is why they have got all the earthshaking development.
