Sierra Leone’s national team, Leone Stars, will not be receiving any financial support from the government ahead of their final two matches of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ivory Coast and DR Congo in Abidjan and Lubumbashi respectively.

A correspondence signed by acting Director of Sports, Saidu B Mansaray, informed the team manager that there will be no funding for both matches.

The correspondence reads: “We received information from State House that there will be no funding for the two remaining matches against Ivory Coast and DR Congo to be played in November 2014. In this connection, you are to inform all the players concerned that the ministry will not provide air ticket and appearance fee for the above matches.”

Upon receiving the correspondence, Leones Stars team manager Christian Dauda informed the players about the development and urged them not to undergo any financial expenses ahead of both matches.

Writing via his legal consultant, Ibrahim Bangura, he informed the foreign based players that: “The Ministry of Sports has instructed us to inform all technical officials and players of the national team of Sierra Leone (Leone Stars) that the government of Sierra Leone will not be able to finically support our national team for the two matches against Ivory Coast and Congo in November 2014.”

“We therefore inform you all not to undergo any finical expenses as we will not be in position to refund air tickets or pay match allowances and all cost of accommodation.”
