SLFA president, Mrs. Isha Johansen, appeals for a change of mindset

President of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), Mrs. Isha Johansen, has called on football stakeholders and the football family to build on the positive of the game for the development of football in the country.

Madam Johansen made this call last Saturday during the launch of the Football Association (FA) Cup, which is expected to kick-off on February 9.

She said: “We have the goodwill to promote the development of football, so let’s focus on the positive for the good of the game. We must not build on the negative. I want to appeal to stakeholders to let go of their mindset and have the willingness to support the dream.”

Meanwhile, the launch of the FA Cup saw the tournament’s sole sponsor, Leocem, present a cheque of Le139 million as the sponsorship package for the tournament, which has been dubbed ‘The Leocem FA Cup’.

Managing Director of Leocem, Arne Johansen, said they are proud to sponsor the tournament because they want to be part of football in the country, adding that they like to be seen as meaningful contributors towards the country’s development.

According to Mr. Johansen, aside the sponsorship package, all participating teams will also benefit from Le1 million for any progress made from one stage to the other, and that each team will also be given some quantity of cement which will go to their communities.

He said: “I am sure by the end of the tournament we will have our own Messis and Ronaldos.”

SLFA acting General Secretary, Abdul Rahman Swaray, said the return of the FA Cup – which is a traditional tournament in the country – will help bring stakeholders together.

The competition, according to the tournament’s director, Sorie Ibrahim Sesay, will for the first time involve all Premier League, First and Second Division clubs in the country.
